Crafting a Simple Window Plant Shelf: A DIY Delight

In the world of home improvement, there are few things as satisfying as creating something beautiful with your own hands. Today, we’re going to share with you how we crafted a remarkably simple window plant shelf that has transformed the look of our space. What’s even better is that you can make this shelf in under an hour, and you don’t need any fancy tools to get the job done. It’s a project that’s not only easy on the hands but also on the wallet, as we completed ours for just $2 using some scrap wood we already had lying around.

Transforming the Window Space

Our window, once a plain and unremarkable part of the room, now stands out with a touch of greenery and a newfound charm. Before adding the floating shelf, the window was just a functional opening, but now it has become a focal point. We’ve always loved having plants around the house, and this window shelf has given us the perfect opportunity to expand our little green collection. The plants are thriving in the sunlight that streams through the window, and it’s a joy to see them every day.

We recently had our old windows replaced, which was a great improvement in itself. Along with this change, we’ve updated some of the pictures in this post to show you the new look. And of course, we couldn’t resist adding even more plants to our window haven.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

The materials and steps for this project can vary a bit depending on your window, but here’s what we used for ours. First, we opted for cove molding or quarter – round, which added a nice finishing touch. Instead of buying a new wooden board, we got creative and used a piece of scrap butcher block we already had. This not only saved us money but also gave the shelf a unique look.

For cutting the wood, we used a circular saw, but if you don’t have one, a miter saw or table saw would work just as well. However, if you’re not comfortable using a power saw, you could always have the board cut to size at a local store like Lowe’s or Home Depot. For the thin quarter – round supports, a small hand saw would do the trick.

In addition to the saw, you’ll need a hammer and nails (or a nail gun if you have one), a measuring tape to ensure accurate cuts, a level to make sure your shelf is straight, a pencil for marking, paintable caulk to fill in any gaps, and paint that matches your existing trim to give it a polished look.

The Step – by – Step Process

The first step is to pick the right window for your plant shelf. Look for a window that gets plenty of sunlight, as most plants thrive in bright light. Measure the width of the window where you want to install the shelf. This will determine the length of your wooden board.

Next, cut the wooden board to the desired length using your saw. If you’re using scrap wood like we did, make sure to check for any imperfections and sand them down if necessary. Then, cut the cove molding or quarter – round to the appropriate lengths to use as supports.

Attach the supports to the bottom of the wooden board using your hammer and nails or a nail gun. Make sure they are evenly spaced and level. Use the level to ensure that the board is straight before securing the supports.

Now, it’s time to install the shelf under the window. Hold the shelf in place and mark the spots where you need to nail it to the wall. Use the level again to make sure the shelf is perfectly horizontal. Hammer the nails into the wall to secure the shelf.

Once the shelf is in place, fill in any gaps between the shelf and the wall or the supports with paintable caulk. This will give it a neat and finished look. Let the caulk dry, and then paint the shelf and the supports to match your existing trim.

Finally, it’s time to add your plants. We love how our window shelf has turned out, and we’re sure you will too. It’s a simple DIY project that can make a big difference in your home. Have you ever tried making a window plant shelf? What kind of plants do you plan to put on yours?
