Transforming Our Bedroom: Six Impactful Upgrades
Our bedroom has a rather unique backstory. Once upon a time, it was a living room, and let me tell you, the journey of converting it into the cozy, functional, and downright beautiful sleeping haven it is today has been quite the adventure. Now, we’re excited to share with you the six most transformative improvements we made, along with some fresh, updated pictures that truly showcase the magic.

The Humble Beginnings
If you take a look at the “before” photos of our home, you’ll see that our future bedroom was, for the most part, a blank slate. But it wasn’t without its challenges. The drywall was in a sorry state, crumbling in places, the blinds were crooked, and the wide doorways leading to the adjacent kitchen were less than ideal. However, there were also some real gems. The fireplace, with its rustic charm, and the wall of French doors, which let in an abundance of natural light, caught our eye immediately. Even back then, when we first laid eyes on the house (which was listed as having only one bedroom when we bought it), we just knew that this space had the potential to be an amazing bedroom.
Upgrade 1: Structural Changes
One of the first things we tackled was the layout. We closed off one of the openings, which not only helped define the space as a bedroom but also added a sense of privacy. This simple yet effective change made a world of difference in how the room felt. It was no longer an open – plan area that bled into the kitchen but a distinct, intimate space dedicated to rest and relaxation.

Upgrade 2: Ample Storage Solutions
Storage was a major concern. With the room’s previous life as a living room, it lacked the kind of storage a bedroom needs. So, we got creative. We added built – in closets and cabinets, carefully designed to maximize every inch of space. Now, there’s a place for everything – from clothes and shoes to linens and personal items. No more clutter lying around; everything has its proper home, making the room feel more organized and serene.
Upgrade 3: Lighting Makeover
Lighting can truly make or break a room, and in the bedroom, it’s especially important. We replaced the old, lackluster lighting fixtures with a combination of soft, warm – toned overhead lights and elegant sconces. The sconces, placed on either side of the bed, create a cozy, intimate atmosphere perfect for reading or winding down at the end of a long day. The overhead lights, dimmed to the right level, provide just the right amount of illumination for getting dressed or tidying up.

Upgrade 4: Flooring Transformation
The old flooring was in desperate need of an upgrade. We opted for a beautiful, light – colored hardwood that not only complements the overall beachy theme we were going for but also makes the room feel more spacious and bright. The smooth, warm texture of the wood underfoot is a delight, and it’s easy to clean and maintain, which is a huge plus.
Upgrade 5: Decor and Furnishings
Of course, no bedroom transformation is complete without the right decor and furnishings. We chose a comfortable, stylish bed that serves as the focal point of the room. The bedding is soft and inviting, in calming colors that enhance the peaceful ambiance. We added a beautiful area rug to anchor the space and add a touch of warmth. Artwork adorns the walls, adding personality and character. The curtains, flowing gently from the brass rod with matching brass rings, not only provide privacy but also add a touch of elegance to the wall of French doors.
Upgrade 6: Window Treatments
The crooked blinds had to go. We replaced them with custom – made curtains that are both functional and beautiful. They can be drawn to block out the early morning sun for those lazy weekend sleeps or left open to let in the natural light and showcase the view. The fabric we chose is light and airy, further enhancing the beachy, relaxed feel of the room.
As we look at our bedroom now, it’s hard to believe it was once a dilapidated living room. These six upgrades have truly transformed it into one of our favorite rooms in the house, a place where we can unwind, recharge, and create memories.
